Neon Love explores the shifting nature of romantic love by contrasting its idealized mid-century portrayal with the fragmented emotional landscape of contemporary culture. Drawing from 1950s comic book imagery—where love was depicted as dramatic, sincere, and archetypal—the series begins with symbols of certainty and clarity. These nostalgic images serve as cultural artifacts, representing a time when romance was visually and socially codified into clear narratives of longing, devotion, and resolution.
Against this foundation, layers of contemporary imagery—graffiti, stickers, urban decay, and visual noise—are introduced as disruptions. These elements reflect the chaos, ambiguity, and overstimulation that now surround modern relationships. Love, once framed as a singular emotional trajectory, is recontextualized as something fractured, performative, and negotiated within an increasingly complex social environment.
The works are constructed as layered composites, often collaging multiple comic book covers into a single composition, and added imagery before undergoing extensive digital transformation. Through a process rooted in decades of photographic and graphic practice, each layer is intentionally worked—distorted, obscured, emphasized, or erased—until the original narrative is altered and a new psychological space emerges. Digital tools are used not for replication, but for revision: to rewrite meaning, introduce tension, and challenge the sincerity of the original image.
The resulting compositions exist in a state of visual and emotional conflict—where nostalgia collides with disruption, and romantic certainty gives way to introspection. Neon Love does not mourn the past nor condemn the present; instead, it invites contemplation of how love has evolved, how it is experienced, and how it is visually performed in a culture shaped by contradiction, immediacy, and noise.
