The artwork of 1940’s and 50’s comics has caught my eye in the last couple of years. My Neon Love series is based off of 40’s and 50’s romance comic book covers.
So as I was looking through Western comic book covers, this image caught my eye. A lone cowboy, racing across the page on a horse in full gallup.
As I worked with the image, and added background and foreground elements, the idea came to me to turn this into multiple pieces and then combine them together. When I created the grid layout (reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s work), I added the film strip corners.
Then the story came to life. It’s depicts a character in an old Western, riding full tilt, each part of the grid of images representing a single frame from the scene. He’s urgently riding day and night to somewhere only the viewer can imagine.
In the future I plan on releasing the individual images as separate limited edition works.
